Total Cohesion

Cohesuion Defined
Defining Cohesion
Definitions have been put forward since the 1950's, and to this day cohesion is not consistently viewed in the same way. Festinger, Scharter and Bach (1950) highlighted cohesion to be; "The total field of forces that act on members to remain in the group" (Cited in Carron et al, 1998b, p.228), and Festinger (1950) again proposed that it was, "the resultant of forces that acting on members to remain in the group" (Cited in Mudrack, 1989a, p.40). These definitions were heavily criticised by Mudrack (1989a) because it focuses "exclusively on individuals at the expense of the group and therefore may not entirely capture the concept of group cohesiveness" (p.42).
With the benefit of hindsight and the abundance of further research and definitions it is clear that cohesion is more than just member's attraction to the group (Cota et al., 1995). Early definitions viewed cohesion as a, one -dimensional construct when in fact it is extremely multi-dimensional.
Several theorists' in-group dynamics (e.g. Cotta et al, 1995; Mudrack, 1989a) suggest that cohesion is best defined as:
"A dynamic process that is reflected in the tendency for a group to stick together and remain united in the pursuit of its instrumental objectives and/or for the satisfaction of member affective needs" (Carron, et al, 1998a, p.213).
This definition explicitly highlights the nature of cohesiveness as a multidimensional construct, it reflected the dynamic nature of cohesion and it reflected the instrumental nature of cohesion associated with positive affect. Logically it is clear that cohesion is multidimensional as there is always more than one single factor that binds group together (Todd et al, 2006, p.262)
As early as 1972, sport researchers realised the problems of measuring cohesion in sport from a one-dimensional perspective. Their response to the challenge posed by these problems was to combine ideas about attraction between individuals in a group, between a group member and his or her group, and concepts about the entire group.

What makes total freedom of speech honestly so great? shouldn't it be limited for the greatest society harmony?
For example: white power rallies. in the USA they have the right to do that. but should they, if it only harms the social cohesion of society?
what about the Westboro Baptist church? surely it's free speech in the US, but wasn't the constitution written in a time when a modicum of common decency was somewhat expected?
isn't Freedom of speech overrated? like I'm completely for political freedom if it doesn't cause harm to societal harmony, but do we really need the right to scream racial epithets in peoples' faces?
This "man" is a self-confessed child molester and should be dealt with severely
