Sunscreen Lotion How the Sun Can Damage the Skin
Sunscreen (also known as sunblock, suntan lotion) is a lotion, spray or other topical product that helps protect the skin from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and which reduces sunburn and other skin damage, with the goal lowering your risk of skin cancer.
However the term suntan lotion usually means the opposite of sunscreen, and instead refers to lotion designed to moisturize and maximize UV exposure and tanning rather than block it. These are commonly called indoor tanning lotions when designed for use with tanning beds or just suntan lotion if designed for outdoor use and may or may not have SPF protection in them.
How the Sun Can Damage the Skin
The sun produces ultraviolet radiation (UVR). This radiation is harmful to skin because it can lead to DNA damage and, ultimately, skin cancer. The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 65% of melanoma and 90% of no melanoma skin cancers are caused by sun exposure.
According to the EPA, 90% of premature aging can be attributed to the sun as well. Wrinkled, sagging, discolored, and leathery skin is most likely due to unprotected skin exposure.
Healthy Tips on how to protect our skin from sun damage:
• If we do need sunscreen, we have to look for better and healthier alternatives. Two nontoxic solutions are the sun blocking minerals zinc oxide (studies show that only clothing and zinc oxide totally block UVB and UVA rays) and titanium dioxide. They are supposed to be safer products. You might be interested in sunscreen products with micronized zinc oxide as the only active ingredient.
• We can use oils from our kitchen such as Sesame Oil, Coconut Oil, Olive and Peanut oils as well as rich in cinnamic acid, Walnut Oil, Raspberry Oil, Avocado Oil, Pomegranate Oil, Jojoba Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Aloe Vera Oil, Coffee Butter, and Shea Butter. All of them have UV protection and damage repair properties and provide natural protection from the sun. You can find a lot of modern sunscreen products which incorporate many of these oils and butters.
• We shouldn't eat carrots, celery, parsley, parsnips and limes before we go to the beach. Studies show that these vegetables contain psoralens, chemicals that may make you unusually sensitive to the sun.
• We shouldn't use skin-care products that contain citrus essential oils, especially bergamot (Citrus bergamia). They might increase the skin's sensitivity to light and cause skin discoloration or rashes.
• We should apply a thin coat of yogurt, sour cream, kefir or aloe-vera gel to reddened areas to help reduce inflammation and cool and moisturize our skin if we did get sunburn.
Sunscreen lotion with a high SPF is a necessity for going to the beach, outdoor activities or going out to sea. In all of these cases, the skin is exposed to prolonged, direct sun which, aside from the life-threatening potential, accelerates wrinkling of the skin and can result in other cosmetic effects, such a spotting. For particularly intense activities, sweat resistant products are available that make certain the protective effects endure even when the skin is sweaty.
Children's skin is much more sensitive than adult skin. Sunscreen lotion designed to accommodate this should be used to both protect a child's skin from the sun and to keep the skin free of ingredients that may be appropriate for adult skin, but not for a child's.
