How can I rewrite this sentence without "is"?
I'm writing a paragraph about autumn and I'm not allowed to use any form of the verb be (is, am, was, were, are, being, been, be). I just noticed that I used "is" in the following sentence, but I can't think of a way to rewrite it in which I don't use "is". I will really appreciate any help. Here's the sentence:
The crisp, cool air rejuvenates and revitalizes my spirit, and it seems as though everything is at peace.
Your wise teacher has done you a big favor. 90% of grammar errors, vague and empty sentences, cruddy and empty paragraphs, and sentences that enfold you like pythons and won't let go stem from the careless and lazy use of "to be" (except for auxiliary verbs, as in the beginning of this sentence). As for this sentence, notice how "I," the focal point of the first clause, plumb disappears in the second half. At that, I really rather like it because the stasis of "is" reinforces the stasis of "at peace." But, to the job at hand. How to render that feeling of peace without "is"? Try this: "and everything seems at peace." The esses are still there, bringing the sentence to a smooth halt and silence (see how I did that?), and the effect remains. Count the times I used "to be" and you have my permission to SHOW this to your teacher. A lesson learned through help and research often counts the most.
