Five Great Anti-Ageing Beauty Products For 30-Something Women
As we enter our 30s, the skin begins to function differently to when we were younger. Some people age faster than others, and this is caused by extrinsic and intrinsic factors.
Intrinsic factors that affect ageing are things within our own bodies, such as our level of physical fitness or our genetic make-up. Factors outside the body, such as lifestyle choices (drinking, smoking, food choices) and ultraviolet light (either from tanning beds or direct sunlight) are extrinsic ageing factors.
Both of these internal and external components lead to the natural process of the skin losing the levels of collagen and elastin it had in younger years. Since these substances keep the skin taut, tight and young-looking, with age our skin begins to sag. Age also causes the epidermis (surface layer) of skin to thin, making the skin seem more transparent; the area where the dermis (sub-layer of skin) and epidermis meet becomes flattened, making the skin more easily bruised and more fragile in general. Other chemical changes may make hair start to thin and less glossy than it was at 20. For women who have had children, loosening skin can mean that stretch marks become a problem all over again.
The 30s are very important for maintaining your complexion well into your middle age. The beauty products you use and how you care for your skin during these ten short years can make all the difference between keeping a youthful look beyond your 50s and looking old before your time at age 35.
The name of the game in your 30s is "collagen". Collagen is the main protein in connective tissue, and we need to make sure we are getting as much of it as we can in our diet. Making dietary changes to keep our collagen levels higher and our skin looking healthy will have visible results. Hydration is also important for cell health.
It's not just what you put into your body at this age that counts, though. Using beauty products such as moisturisers, lotions and masks can make a huge difference too. Facial masks can help draw bad things out of the skin, exfoliate and stimulate cell renewal, helping you deal with environmental toxins (for example, exhaust fumes, paint and chemical gases).
Here are some interesting beauty products you might like to try to support your skin as it matures.
1.) Malie Organic Body Polish. I admit to a bit of a love/hate relationship with this beauty product. It's hard to find (you may need to order online) and the $40 price tag makes me feel a bit cheated because the body polish seems to disappear so quickly in the shower.
After trying a range of different products though, there's definitely something extra that you get from Malie that I haven't noticed with anything else. It leaves a smooth, great-feeling glossiness to the skin that can't be matched. I guess the results speak for themselves. Worth a try.
2.) Roc Retinol Actif Pur Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizing Treatment. Roc Retinol can reverse or prevent some sun damage through a healthy dose of Retinoids (vitamin A). This night time treatment will help get rid of the dead skin that can clog your pores and stimulates the production of collagen to deter the formation of wrinkles.
You can start using this one in your 20s to stop problems before they start but for the 30-somethings it's a must, in my opinion, especially for Australians. The sun is different here and you owe it to your skin to do what you can to fight off the effects of a youth spent in the sun. Check with your dermatologist to see if she thinks it's time for you to start with retinol.
3.) Tracie Martyn's Amla Purifying Cleanser. This is not a facial cleanser, it's a treatment, baby. Amla exfoliates the skin with lactic and malic acids, as well as papaya and pineapple enzymes. The cleansing ingredient is that old, oil-fighting, teenage stand-by, salicylic acid. This also has tons of gallic acid (an antioxidant), vitamin C, turmeric, Indian gooseberry and amla. Leave it on before rinsing off while you have a shower to let your skin drink in all that goodness. It costs about $65 but it'd be worth paying twice the price for this beauty product.
4.) Your Best Face Correct. This one's on the steep side at $150, but not many eye creams will "wow" you like this one will. It contains a patented molecule that is supposed to pull free radicals out of the skin, leading to almost immediate and noticeable improvement.
There's simply not enough time, here, room to talk about how this cream will help you, so I'll keep it short: if you want your friends to notice, and if you want your crow's feet to start hitting the road, you can't do better than this. I have heard, though, that one of the Shiseido Future Solution eye creams is also pretty great, but haven't tried it myself.
5.) Olay Regenerist UV Defense SPF 15 Regeneration Lotion. If you're stubborn and just can't stay out of the sun into your 30s, you need to do something to help your skin defend itself, while, if possible, helping it recover. Olay will do this for you. This beauty lotion provides SPF 15 protection across the UV spectrum, lightly moisturizes the skin, and is brimming with recuperative natural ingredients such as proteins and antioxidants.
As far as sunscreens go, it's a touch expensive ($19) but in terms of preventing future damage research it's a very, very small investment! Everyone should wear a daily sunscreen so it's worth giving this double-whammy beauty product a go. Besides, research has shown Olay to be leader of the pack among sun lotions.
