Philosophy versus Revelation: which is real, which is false?

Philosophy is the product of man's own imaginative thinking, the aroma of its conjecture. Religion is a divine, presumably, thought.

Both philosophy and religion deal with all aspects of what the human mind can envisage. Both predict a world-view and a universal outlook. Both deal with explanations of what we observe and what we are able to think upon.

Both are theoretical frameworks that do not provide proof nor evidence for their proclamation. Both philosophy and religion offer man an insight into things, objects and phenomena. Both call on logic to persuade the mind and the heart to believe and accept what they assume.

Where philosophy and religion part company is in the origin of the proclamations and premises they proclaim. This origin is man in philosophy and God in revelation. If you do not happen to believe in God then you would consider religion as a product of man. The great majority of human beings believe it is the product of man's own thinking and imagination.

While philosophy attempts to draw out for you a cornerstone of thought embedded, whether in materialism or in metaphysics, religion asserts that God is the only cornerstone for everything.

Philosophy offers you an explanation of the universe and religion sends the universe to its creator God. Philosophy may or may not believe in God for it is the product of humans and these are prone to belief and disbelief, while religion's only thesis is God is.

From Platonic thought to Nietzschean thought and to Bertrand Russell thought and Jean Paul Sartre, we have presumptions that God does not exist. From Aristotle to Leibniz, Kant and Kierkegaard God is an absolute necessity required by the necessity of the mind and moral necessity.

So here you are faced with two categories of thinkers who think about the same thing, and take for their thinking the same phenomenon, but have two opposite points of view and opposite beliefs.

Religion, all religions, the concept of the divine is essential. While some religions believe in polytheism, like Hindus, or Sikh, and monotheistic religions believe in the oneness of God, like Judaism, Christianity and Islam, while Christianity believe in a Trinity of God the son, God the father and the Holy ghost. Islam and Judaism believe in the indivisible one God, the eternal, who does not beget and is not begotten.

If we inquire into the enigmatic dilemma of reality and truth we can ask which is real and which is false? Which is true and authentic and which is untrue and unauthentic?

Philosophy stand in opposition to revelation.

The point of departure is that philosophy claim reason as its tool of investigation to attain the truth, while revelation claims faith and belief.

Philosophy makes the mind as the judge while religion makes the mind and the heart as the arbitrator. Both refer to man's own judgment in order to persuade or dissuade man to accept the one argument or the other.

But big difference between the two can be admitted namely, that philosophy is limited to man while revelation comes from the creator of man. Philosophy cannot see more what man can predict and religion sees what God, creator of man the universe can see. Philosophy purports to predict a purpose for man's existence, sometimes annihilating such purpose altogether, as in atomism, existentialism and materialism.

It denies completely a purpose for life other than life itself and renders life absurd and without meaning. Philosophy does not establish neither reason, in most part of cases, nor origin nor finality for man's existence. While revelation informs man of a reason for his own being. It informs man of the origin of his own being and informs him of the purpose and finality of his own being.

Philosophy is limited, often, to explaining matter and time, while religion explains the purpose of matter and time. Philosophy attempts theoretically to explain our lives in terms of life. Religion explains our life in terms of a creator. Philosophy does not deal with man's life as a place of trial and testing. While religion is all but this. Philosophy does not identify man's existence in terms of another life where reward and punishment are administered to everyone. Religion is but this.

Philosophy does not identify the devil as a reality but revelation makes the devil as an important factor in man's life. Philosophy does not deal with an overall plan for man in terms of the metaphysics, Aristotelian philosophy for example is limited to a necessity for God but no further thing comes out of this sterile argument.

Religion tells man what he is there for and what he ought to do and what he can lose or gain if he follows its prescriptions. Philosophy does not touch on any of these issues but rather offers man an idea or a framework of the philosopher's outlook. Good and bad are common subjects of both philosophy and religion.

But philosophy remains at best within the limits of man's mind while revelation offers man a more comprehensive and total explanation of his existence informing him of what he ought to do in light of the consequences of his thoughts, beliefs, actions vis-à-vis God and how to earn eternal felicity in the hereafter against punishment in hell fire.

Religion is a manual of how to live and why should we live and in light of what should we conduct our affairs. The favor of God represents ultimate good in religion while good in philosophy is a wide subject of interpretations dependant on every philosopher's outlook. Religion invites man to believe in God for man's own sake.

Philosophy does not care about man's own sake in terms of the divine but disputes for definitions which are in the ultimate analysis sterile and useless.

In religion there two categories of humans namely believers and disbelievers with a fixed focus namely God. Philosophy may assert the need for a God while at the same time offers the opposite view for the non-existence of a God.

It is entirely up to our adaptation of either philosophical arguments or religious ones.

Man is entirely free in both domains to choose for himself.

But both philosophy and revelation stem from the sensible to attain the intelligible. The sensible is explained by the intelligible. However, both are speculative in their outlook and are non-scientific in their approach nor in their foundations. This is why both gave grounds to scientific thinking. But, it remains for science to uncover the validity of religion and philosophy, an impossibility and a contradiction in terms.

However, Man chooses for himself his own convictions having the responsibility of thinking, judging and concluding.
