Causes of Dry Mouth - Xerostomia
We have all experienced some degree of dry mouth. Normal dry mouth commonly occurs in the morning when we wake as our saliva flow decreases when we sleep. Saliva is produced by 3 main salivary glands and many minor salivary glands that are scattered throughout the mouth. Dry mouth occurs when these glands do not function properly.
If one suffers from persistent dry mouth, this can be debilitating and cause health problems. Saliva contains enzymes and proteins that help with food digestion, help control the balance of bacteria in the mouth and coupled with the dishwashing washing action of saliva, help in preventing tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease. Those with dry mouth have difficulty tasting, swallowing and even speaking properly. They are more susceptible to cavities, oral infections and Periodontal (gum) disease.
What are the symptoms of dry mouth:
- a sticky, dry feeling in the mouth
- problems with chewing, swallowing, tasting, or speaking
- halitosis/mouth odor
- a burning feeling in the mouth
- cracked lips
- a dry, irritated tongue
- mouth sores
- sleep interruptions due to thirst
- gum inflammation or infection in the mouth
- difficultly in wearing dentures/dental appliances
Non Oral Symptoms of dry mouth:
- dry throat
- dry nose
- changes in sense of smell
- heartburn
- dry or burning eyes
- constipation
- dry skin/scalp
- vaginal itching, dryness, history of fungal infections
- breathes through the mouth
Clinical Signs and Complications of dry mouth
Depending on the cause of dry mouth, the following signs and complications vary form mild to severe:
- mucositis (inflammation of the lining of the mouth)
- difficulty wearing dentures
- candidiasis (fungal infection) especially on the tongue and palate
- dental caries (decay): increase in prevalence, located at the sites generally not susceptible to decay
- thicker, more stringy, whole saliva
- difficulty with milking saliva from the ducts of the major salivary glands
- loss of moist, glistening of the oral mucosa
- dryness of oral mucous membranes
- oral mucosa appears thin and pale
- fissuring and lobulation, dorsum of the tongue
- angular cheilitis (cracking of the corners of the mouth)
- gingivitis
- cracked, bleeding gums
Tips for Managing Dry Mouth
- If your dry mouth is caused by medicine, your physician might change your medicine or adjust the dose.
- Visit your dentist regularly for a check-up, cleaning and fluoride treatment.
- Maintain meticulous oral hygiene using SLS-free , fluoridated ( Biotène Toothpaste )
- Moisten your mouth with Oralbalance . May be used under dental prostheses.
- Chew sugarless, enzymatic moisturing gum, Biotène Dental Gum.
- Avoid alcoholic, carbonated, citrus and caffeine-containing drinks.
- Apply lip lubricants or balms as required.
- Drink liquids with meals and use gravies, sauces, yogurt, broth, margarines, and mayonnaise to make food easier to swallow
- Eat puree foods or try soft foods like macaroni and cheese, stews, mashed potatoes, soup, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, yogurt and ice cream.
- Avoid dry foods such as cookies, toast and crackers, or soften them with liquids before eating.
- Carry a small water bottle so you can take frequent sips during the day.
- Suck sugarless hard candies (avoiding those with citric acid).
- Avoid overly salty foods.
- Avoid chewable vitamin C and acidic, sugared lozenges.

What is the best moisurizer for normal/dry skin?
I don't want it to make me look shiny or anything.
Preferrably oil-free, comedogenic, not tinted, with SPF.
Right now I use the Olay oil-free stuff, but I'm not fond of it because I heard that they test on animals. ]
I meant non-comedogenic! Haha. sorry. It's early/late.
I use Alba Organics moisturizer. I love it! It doesn't have any SPF, though. If you're in the US, I get it at CVS pharmacy. They sell it at Whole Foods, too. Kind of expensive...$17 a jar. But totally worth it.
