Why Refer Your Patients to a MED Group Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Provider

The value of working with in-Network versus out-of-Network Providers is easy to understand when one realizes the costs associated with using out-of-Network Providers—even for durable medical equipment.

In general, using out-of-Network Providers will cost the patient more than using Providers that are in-Network, whether that Provider is a Prescribing Physician, Hospital and/or a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Provider.

In fact, while the Payer allowed amount will and does vary based on the insurance plan the patient owns, the table below illustrates how much more a patient might pay for non-network services .

Comparison of in network versus out of network Patient costs for DME rendered services

                                              In Network          Out of Network

Provider Billed Charge             $300                           $300

Payer Allowed Amount             $200                           $200

Additional Provider Discount   -$100                           0

Total Charge That Must Be Paid $200                        $350

What the Payer Pays (% of Allowed Amount)

                                          $170 (85% of $200)           $120 (60% of $200)

Patient Payment Amount (Balance)   $30                    $230

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN?

Whether you have a Primary care, Orthopedic, Pulmonology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology and/or Podiatry practice, every practice type requires an ongoing commitment to best practice customer service to deliver optimal patient satisfaction. Delivering optimal patient satisfaction does require your office staff to manage the patient's reimbursement experience. By referring patients to in-Network Providers, a lower patient payment will result. And that experience will likely translate to less calls to your practice and happier, more satisfied patients.

Another equally important component of managing patient satisfaction revolves around the entire patient and DME Provider experience. Did the DME Provider contact the patient timely? Did the DME Provider present his licensure and credentials to the patient? Did the DME Provider review the prescribed equipment therapy with the patient and explain all of its benefits? Did the DME Provider manage the reimbursement process effectively and answer all of the patient's questions? Did the DME Provider provide a toll-free number to call for follow up and patient inquiry? Did the DME Provider communicate the patient's experience to the referring Physician practice?

All of these performance standards can help deliver optimal patient satisfaction. In addition, they can help contribute to the improved outcomes your patients require.

THE MED GROUP IS A PREFERRED PARTNER WITH HNA.

The MED Group's national agreement with HNA helps ensure that your practice has access to the finest DME Providers in the industry.

Skilled in optimizing the patient satisfaction experience, MED DME Providers excel in professional, accountable care–from the moment your staff refers a patient to the moment the patient's DME equipment is retrieved and the final claim is filed.

For all the DME your patients may require, including but not limited to: wheelchairs, scooters, oxygen systems, nebulizers, orthotics, canes, crutches, walkers and more, the MED Group Network of DME Providers delivers unparalleled service to your patients.

About the Author

I have an IT degree and I want to further my education/career in the medical field, what should I look into?

I have been working as a systems analyst at a hospital for a while and I like what I do. I am interested in furthering my career by either getting a secnd degree (i.e. a Healthcare Admin Masters) or possibly becoming and RN/LPN/MA or something along those lines. If anyone has any recommendations that would be very helpful! I know any clinical study would be beneficial, but I also want something that will optimize my career growth and income ;) .

Thanks!
