is it important to build muscle to help burn fat?

ive started a fitness regime and i heard its good to build some muscle for fat burn~? can someone help out please? also my muscles are aching in my legs does this mean im almost building muscle ?

having more muscle means that there's more body tissue that needs to be supported and supplied with energy. That ultimatly means you'll be using up more energy from the food energy you intake daily, even if you're sedentary. This'll translate into you retaining less excess calories ( which means not as much will be converted into fat tissue, as excess calories = converted to fat). So having more muscle can be good, but the only draw back is the method at which you're excercisin. Im guessing you're strength training (such as lifting weights etc) and when you're strength training, the energy system being used (anaerobic lactic) uses up glycogen and glucose as fuel. What this does is lower your blood sugar levels in your blood and makes you hungrier afterwards. A good way to build some muscle mass and to burn fat is by performing aerobic excercises (such as jogging). For this type of excercise, you dont need to be going to the intensity where you're out of breath because if you're going that hard, you're once again using the wrong energy system. The way you can test to see if you're at the right intensity is to do the "talk test". thats when you're jogging and you can still talk to someone beside you (meaning your not out of breath) At this intensity level, you're body is using mainly fat as an energy source (and not glucose/glycogen; so you wont be as hungry afterwards)

PS. aching muscles in ur legs doesnt mean ur building muscle; it just means there's lactic acid build up which is a by-product of anaerobic lactic energy system. to get rid of the aching you should always do a cool down after ur work out to try and get rid of the acid. you can do a light jog/walk etc ; basically anythign to promote blood flow in the muscles ur workin out.
