The retina of your eye contains cells that respond to different wavelengths (colours) of light. They are called L cones, M cones, and S cones. A chemical called rhodopsin is what makes these cells sensitive to light. When your eyes are exposed to red light only for some length of time the rhodopsin in the L cones becomes depleted relative to the amount of it in the M and S cones. This causes the L cones to be desenitized until their supply of rhodopsin is naturally replenished. Neural processing compares the outputs of all three types of cones. This causes colour opponency when you walk out into normal light and your eyes will be more sensitve to green light for a little while and everything will have a green tint.
