Why I Became A Rain Rescue Volunteer To Help Pets In Crisis

I attended a local beer festival back in July which was being held to raise money for a local pet rescue charity called Rain Rescue. Little did I realise what I was about to learn about the horrors of a serious dog problem in and around South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire is one of the cruelty hot spots in the UK.The volume of stray dogs and those ultimately euthanised puts the county in the top 10 across England. In the north, there is a lack of rescue centres to tackle this ever growing problem on both education and the prevention of overbreeding. Rain Rescue was created by a small group of unhappy pet owners who were simply appalled at the high volume of neglected and abandoned pets, heartbroken owners having to have their pets put to sleep after a short stay in the local dog pounds due to family crisis situations.

I was horried find to learn that over 107,000 pets were reported as missing in 2009 and of those, 9000 unclaimed dogs were destroyed. Of those 107,000, Rain Rescue saved the lives of 359 of those dogs and re-homed 145 of them. They paid for vet treatment, spay and neuter operations for 170 pets and transported 68 dogs to safety, as well as help find homes fo 50 cats. All this was paid for by public donations.

Dog pounds are kennels that are funded by the local council where lost, stray and roamimg dogs are kept for a period of 7 days in which time, owners are expected to come forward and claim their dogs. The disturbing thing about this scenario is the fact that after 7 days, if the dog has not benn claimed by their owners, they are either re-homed, boarded out or sadly put to sleep. Some of the dogs are simply put to sleep on the 7th day without reprieve for various reasons and it is the dogs in these catagories that Rain Rescue sets out to rescue.

The dogs that are rescued by Rain Rescue are sent all over the country to new home and boarding kennels where the dog is given a second chance and has no fear of being put to sleep. They remain in a safe situation until new owners are found and all this is at the expense of the charity.

Rain Rescue became a registered charity in 2006 and continue their good work with the aid of unpaid volunteers and public donations. They have certainly given me something to think about and have opened my eyes to a growing problem that otherwise I would not have known existed. That is why I became a Rain Rescue volunteer to help pets in crisis.

What would you look for in a rescue?

So I'm thinking that I want to volunteer at a horse rescue.

The only thing is, I don't want to be involved in many of those faux "rescues" that seem to prevail over the reputable ones.

So really, what would you qualify as a good horse rescue? What kind of things should I keep my eye open on to make sure that the place isn't some crazy hoarder that will be featured on Fugly Blog? Are there any good ones that you can think of in North Illinois or SE Wisconsin?

Thanks!

Well, the things I would look for:

First of all, are they 501(c)3 approved. 501(c)3 is applicable US Tax Code section that gives the conditions for becoming a tax-exempt charity. If a rescue is not 501(c)3 approved, that means that they have not met the conditions that allow them to raise funds exempt of taxes, and to offer donors to the rescue a tax deduction for the amount of the donation.

If a rescue is not 501(c)3 approved, it may still be doing good work, but it would mean to me that it's most likely to be operated by people who are not serious about the purposes of their organization, and that they are not very businesslike about their organization. If they haven't gotten their 501(c)3 exemption, they may not have financial accountability, which means that donations to the organization may not be used for the stated purpose of the organization.

If it is 501(c)3 exempt, then the next step I would take is to call the local Humane Association and a couple of the local government Animal Control departments (or Animal Regulation or whatever the local government calls the branch of law enforcement that deals with citing people for animal abuse) and ask them if they know about the organization. They won't necessarily be able to recommend a rescue for you to volunteer with, but they sure as heck would know if the organization isn't on the up-and-up.

With regard to rescues that work with racehorses, whether Thoroughbred or Standardbred, I would check to see if it's known to one of these organizations:

Thoroughbred Adoption Network: http://www.thoroughbredadoption.com/
Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation: http://www.trfinc.org/
New Vocations: http://horseadoption.com/

In general, the major rescue organizations are familiar with each other, and should be able to give you information about other rescues.

Finally, before I would volunteer, I would go actually see the place and talk to the person or people who would be supervising you. My husband and I have done a fair amount of volunteer work for some of the museums in our area, and my husband works with volunteers for a small city-run local museum. The unfortunate thing is that you sometimes find people in non-profits that depend on volunteers who are on little power trips, and who treat their volunteers like cr@p: "my way or the highway" about the way things are done, volunteers are treated as if they are stupid and only fit for grunt-work, and sometimes the person who oversees the volunteers has zero people skills and can make work for the volunteers hell.

Talk to other people who volunteer for the rescue, and make sure to ask them how long they've been there. While you do get a lot of turnover in volunteers, it's a very bad sign if all the people who volunteer seem to be newbies. That generally means that conditions are so bad that people don't stick around long.

Try to find out what your duties as a volunteer would be. If the person you're talking to seems vague, ask them specifically if you'll be working with the horses, or will you be assigned other duties (like working the phones soliciting donations). If they won't be specific about what you will be doing, you might want to keep looking. FWIW, horse rescues have people up the wazoo who want to volunteer to work with the horses, and they may need people to do office/fundraising/administrative work. If they're ethical, they'll be honest about that.

Finally, just listen to your gut feeling about the people and place. If there's anything that doesn't feel right or makes you uncomfortable, keep looking.
