Daylight Perfection
Choosing the perfect lighting
A common mistake interior designer's make is overlooking the importance of lighting. Choosing the right light or lamp highlights areas of a room which creates an impressive impact. Alternatively, the wrong lighting can make a room look drab and lifeless. Lighting fixtures can be distinguished into several groups these include: accent lighting, task lighting or general use lighting.
- Task lighting illuminates a specific area or space. Its main purpose is to make visual tasks easier to complete. Task lights must be bright so that eye strain is avoided. Task lighting is most commonly seen as desk lamps or lights fitted under kitchen cabinets.
- Accent or Mood Lighting highlights areas within a room or a particular piece of decor. It can effectively dramatise the room. Track lights and some wall mounted fixtures are common examples of accent lighting.
- General lighting is commonly used for the substitution of daylight. A commonly used form of general lighting is a pendant light in the living room or chandelier in a powder room. Its main function is to distribute light evenly across the room.
Once you have chosen the purpose of your lighting fixture, there are several questions you need to further to consider. This will ensure that you make the right decision.
- How high is the ceiling? If the ceiling is too low a long pendant light would look ridiculous. Alternatively if there is a high ceiling an extension rod may be needed.
- What colours are present?
- How much daylight is present?
- How much energy will be needed?
If you have considered all these questions then you should lastly consider: aesthetics.
- Does the style of light suit the style of the room?
An easy way to ensure that you choose the right style of lamp is to just remember the phrase ‘like attracts like.' An ultra chic and contemporary floor lamp would not suit a colonial style room, it would look mismatched.
As you can see there are several aspects you need to consider when choosing the right lighting for your room. It is important that you consider these so that you decide on the perfect lighting fixture for your home.
