Neck And Back Pain Primary Care
It's amazing what number of people do something that ends up in pain in their neck or back and instantly run to a doctor, chiropractor, acupuncturist, physical consultant, or a kind of pro which will assume that their discipline will solve the problem. The amount of expert practitioners and methods of pain relief is stupefying, particularly in the light of what quantity of folks pursue these techniques, spend thousands of greenbacks, and get no relief. Ice causes muscles and tissue to shrink which makes it especially good for swelling. Heat causes growth, which is good for injuries that are unpleasant or sore muscles where there's not swelling. It is good for sore joints, and is often more relaxing than ice. Heat will help loosen up muscles that are stiff or sore from athletic activity, so long as no swelling is present.
Mobilization for neck and back pain : Usually, straightforward mobilization of the area is a first treatment that permits the muscle to start to build back up its "range" of motion. When attending a chiropractor, you may notice they delicately manipulate the muscles and lightly pull the neck side to side or bend the back thru a variety of motion. This is all fine, but something that you can do yourself. The likelihood of injury is just about non existent because you can easily tell where the limits of the motion are by the discomfort. And mobilizing the area in broader and wider ranges of motion will necessarily result in eventual healing and normal range of motion. This is all because these things resolve themselves almost each and every time. The sole exception to that will be agony caused by disease, but when whatever is painful is clearly a result of sleeping "wrong" or sudden, nerve stressing movement, it resolves itself. That is only speeded up barely by mobilizing the area and hastening the complete range of motion. Secondary to mobilization is massage for back and neck discomfort alleviation. Again, a characteristic chiropractic treatment you can get or get for free from a spouse or beneficial family member.
In summary, for primary or first reply for back or neck pain, rest, heat, ice, mobilization, and massage will finally resolve the overwhelming majority of back and neck pain that results as a sudden onset of minor irritation of the muscles and nerves. This isn't an alternative to hospital treatment, but using the techniques in this post may significantly improve the primary debilitation or be the ensuing cure for the condition. How do I take care of my car in the winter?
I just moved to a part of the country that gets very cold and snowy winters. Since I came from a warmer area, I'm not sure if there is anything special I need to do with my car in the winter to take care of it, prevent the cold/snow/ice from hurting it, and make sure I'm still driving safely. Any advice would be appreciated. Even if it's something basic that seems obvious to you, I might not know since I've never had a car in a cold area before.
Your honesty warms my heart! Lets start with Warm up:
My rule of thumb for gasoline engines is as follows: Always wait for the temperature to reach the normal level before asking it to do heavy pulling or acceleration. After the initial start warm up times below, and until normal temperature is reached use only light throttle settings.
Above 40F (4C) Allow 10 seconds for proper lubrication before driving.
30 to 40F ( -2 to 4C) Allow 15 seconds for proper lubrication before driving.
15 to 30F (-10 to 0 C) Allow 30 seconds to 1 minute for proper lubrication and partial cylinder head warm up before driving.
0 to 15F ( - 18 to -10 C) Allow 2 to 5 minutes for proper lubrication and cylinder head warm up before driving.
Below Zero F ( -18 C ) Warm up for at least 5 minutes before driving to reduce engine wear and improve operator comfort!
In terms of vehicle preparation you need to have the anti-freeze / coolant tested for proper freeze protection level, it should provide protection to at least 10 degrees F / 5 degrees C COLDER than the RECORD low temperature for your new locale. If your coolant fails this test or is more than 4 years old then the cooling system should be flushed and a 50/50 blend of coolant and water installed to provide freeze protection to -40 F / -40C and corrosion protection for the cooling system. At the same time have the hoses and belts checked and make sure that all engine compartment shields are properly installed to prevent snow from entering the engine compartment.
Fill the windshield washer reservoir with pure un-diluted windshield washer anti-freeze, if you have been using plain water then run it dry before filling it then run it for a few seconds after filling it to purge the water from the lines and nozzles.
From here on my recommendations are assuming that COLD equals SNOW and ICE driving conditions.
Buy a combination snow brush ice scraper. Buy a pair of insulated leather gloves and a small shovel and a plastic screw top bottle of kitty litter and put them in the trunk for use when you get stuck in the snow.
Go to the tire store and pay the long buck for a set of 4 snow tires. Hankook I-Pike are the best value I have found recently, Cooper and Mastercraft also make serious snow and ice tires which are reasonably priced.
Even with good snow tires you must drive much slower when the road surface is snow covered or icy than you can normally drive, even on a 70 mph posted expressway you may find that most drivers will be going only 45-55 on ice or snow at near freezing temperatures, it will take you 4 to 6 times farther to stop than it will on wet pavement and TEN times the distance of dry pavement! Allow a much greater following distance between you and the car ahead of you! Snow and ice at well below freezing ( mid teens F / -10C ) will provide traction similar to wet pavement, but beware of drifting snow on the road - it can easily pull your car into a skid! Cornering is likewise hazardous, the Yellow corner speed warning signs are calculated for wet pavement! On ice or snow at near freezing temperatures you may need to enter the curve at 5 to 10 mph slower than the posted speed to maintain control. Slippery road driving is a learned skill - on the same surface you as a new slippery road driver may be having difficulty controlling your car at 35 mph there may be experienced ice drivers who are perfectly comfortable driving 55 or even 60 mph! Go your own speed! Any driver going faster than you on a slippery road is responsible for not only themselves but for everyone ahead of them.
When you start out on a slippery road accelerate to 10 to 15 mph then briefly but firmly press the brake pedal until either the anti-lock system engages ( vibrating noisy brake pedal ) or the wheels skid to determine just how much grip you have on the roadway, if you suspect that the road surface has changed repeat this procedure, until you have experience with controlling skids if you suspect the surface has turned to ice under your wheels coast down to 30 mph or less before performing a brake test. At the very first opportunity drive to an empty parking lot covered with 2-3 inches of snow and practice turning and stopping, and skidding and recovering from skids without stopping. When your front wheel drive car starts to over steer ( rear end trying to pass the front when turning ) you must follow the line you want to travel with the steering wheel and back off slightly the throttle, but do not take your foot completely off of the throttle because it will make the skid worse.
