Dads Guide To The Ages Of Kids For Starting Sports

A lot of the fun of being a dad is helping kids discover their passions, and that starts with sharing what turns you on. If you love to play golf, you'll hope that you and your child will one day be walking the links together. For others, it's basketball or baseball. Here's a quick look at when many kids are ready to experiment with different sports:

Swimming
Since babies swim in the womb, this is the most natural sport they can do. And, it's one you can do with them. Many baby swim classes exist. Check out your local Y, around one year old. Aggressive swim coaches will suggest that all kids can learn to swim; be aware that kids learn on their own schedule and that some can't actually swim until around five, no matter how many lessons you force on them. Swimming is a basic life skill though, and one all dads should help their kids learn.

Downsides: Poop in pool (never let your kid in the pool without swim diapers), long prep time with showers and locker rooms.

Football
Fast and furious, this is a good game for active energized kids, beginning around five. Don't allow anything other than flag football until around eight though.

Downside: Depending on how protective you are, it may create safety concerns.

Tennis
While little kids can bat the ball around, watch for the kind of hand/eye coordination need to develop around eight years old.

Downside: While tennis elbow may not be the greatest danger, watch out for flying racquets.

Soccer
The love of parents everywhere since kids can run and kick very early on. Some classes start at four, but wait until five if you want to see kids learn to play as a team.

Downside: Do you really want to become a "soccer mom?"

Baseball
The great American pastime is also hard to learn until the kindergarten years, though T-Ball can be fun for pre-schoolers around four.

Downsides: Seen as very slow and boring, and often requires a major time commitment for parents as well.

Gymnastics
Start on gymnastics as early as three. Kids at this age show no fear and can learn things older ones just won't try.

Downside: Strenuous and requires good coaching to prevent injuries.

Basketball
You can try basketball earlier, but little kids may find dribbling and especially, shooting frustrating until age six. Basketball is a great game for cardiovascular exercise throughout life.

Downside: Kids who are not as tall or fast may feel left out of the game.

There's nothing 6 year olds or older kids Camping with dadlove more than being in the outdoors. You can use camping with kids to teach idependence and self-sufficiency.

What can i make for dinner 2moro on a budget of £5 that is healthy and a real winter comfort food dish?

I am on a diet and have been really good, but i just fancy something like pork chop with mash potato or shepherds pie or something along these lines. But i want to be able to make it cheaply and i dont want it to take ages of prep and it must be no more than 500 cals max.

Suggestions welcome xx
Should add, dinner for 1, but if more than 1 portion can save it :)

Shepherd's Pie

Shepherd's Pie oozes full on flavour and makes a simple but sensational family meal

Servings: 4
Level of difficulty: Easy
Preparation Time: 40 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Ingredients
2 tbsp Bacon, fat (or dripping, or 1 tbsp sunflower oil and 1 tbsp butter)
1 onion, chopped
2 Carrots, finely diced
2 sticks Celery, finely chopped
1 bay leaf
3 sprigs Thyme
2 tbsp Parsley, chopped
675g minced lamb, (or beef for a cottage pie)
1 tbsp plain flour
2 tbsp tomato ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch salt and fresh ground black pepper
For the topping:
900g Potatoes, cooked in their skins
60g Butter
150ml Milk
1 pinch Nutmeg, freshly grated

Method

1. Take a large deep frying pan and heat half the fat in it. Add the vegetables, and fry gently, allowing plenty of time, until patched with brown at the corners, turning them frequently. Scoop out onto a plate.

2. Raise the heat under the pan and add half the mince. Pat it down flat, and leave to fry without disturbing for several minutes until the underneath has browned properly (this is what gives the cooked mince a good rich brown colour, and its proper, deep, meaty savouriness). Then break it all up, turning it over. Repeat the browning process, and then lift the mince out of the pan with a slotted spoon.

3. Repeat with the remaining mince.

4. Drain off excess fat from the pan, and then return the mince and vegetables to it. Sprinkle the flour over the mince and vegetables and stir for about 30 seconds. Next add the herbs (tie bay leaf and thyme in a bundle for easy retrieval at the end of the cooking time), together with the water, tomato ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

5. Bring up to the boil, then turn the heat down very low, and leave to simmer quietly for 45-60 minutes or so. Check every now and then, and add a little more water if it is drying out. By the time it is cooked, the mixture should be moist and succulent and thick. If it seems watery carry on cooking to evaporate off some of the liquid. Taste and adjust seasoning, then tip into a pie dish and leave to cool.

6. Set the oven to 190°C/gas 5. Scoop the potato flesh out of the skins, and mash with 45g butter and enough milk to give a mash that is fairly soft, but will hold its shape.

7. Dollop the mashed potato here and there over the mince, then spread down lightly in an even layer. Use the tines of a fork to make wavy lines (or some other interesting pattern) on the surface. Dot with remaining butter.

8. Bake for around 30 minutes until the top is browned and the juices from the meat are oozing and bubbling up round the edge.

Cook's Notes: What is the difference between shepherd's pie and cottage pie? Shepherd's pie is made out of lamb (or mutton), therefore cottage pie is made out of beef.
